Picking Your Seat on Delta's Embraer E-170

Most of you reading this will be sitting in the Main Cabin, rows 9 through 18, in a tidy 2-2 layout that means no middle seat anywhere on the airplane — a genuine perk of this little Embraer. From there the cabin only gets roomier as you move forward, so let's walk the whole jet nose to tail.

First Class (rows 1-3)

Nine seats in a 1-2 layout, with a solo A seat on the left and a C/D pair on the right, riding on 37 inches of pitch and a broad 20-inch width. Row 1 is the standout: 1A, 1C, and 1D all have nothing reclining into your knees and a shot at extra legroom. The trade-off is real, though — no underseat stowage up here, and the tray table lives in the armrest, which narrows the seat a touch. Row 1 also sits just behind the forward galley and closet, so expect some crew traffic. Skip row 3 if you can. It backs up to a curtain rather than a solid bulkhead, and 3C is exposed to the aisle where a service cart can clip your elbow. Reviewers land these around three stars — fine, not special.

Delta Comfort+ (rows 4-8)

Five rows in 2-2 at 34 inches of pitch. Row 4 is the pick of this cabin: 4A, 4B, 4C, and 4D all get extra legroom thanks to the open space ahead, and travelers consistently rate them four stars. The only gripe is the curtain or partition in front, which some find fidgety. Be aware that the wing starts climbing into this cabin — rows 6 through 8 are over-wing, so the window seats there trade a clear view for a look at the flap track and engine. If scenery matters, stay in rows 4 or 5.

Main Cabin (rows 9-18)

Ten rows, 2-2, at a tighter 30-31 inches. A couple of things shape where you want to be. First, the over-wing zone continues through row 11, so 9A/9D through 11A/11D still look out onto the wing. Second, this is an Embraer, and Embraer spaced its big windows for an all-economy cabin; once you add First and Comfort+ up front, the windows drift out of sync with the seats. The misalignment is milder toward the front of the Main Cabin and worse toward the back, so if you want to actually see out, a window seat in rows 12-14 treats you better than one deep in the tail.

The row to avoid outright is 18. The rear galley and lavatory both sit directly behind it, which means noise, a queue forming at your shoulder, and recline that's limited or gone entirely. Our data flags 18B and 18C as the worst seats on the airplane, with 18A and 18D only marginally better; reviewers there talk about limited recline and general annoyance. Row 17 catches some of the same rear-galley bustle. For a quiet, quick-exit Main Cabin seat, aim for rows 9-12 up front — close to the single forward door for faster deplaning, and far from the rear commotion.

One practical note across the jet: Wi-Fi is available cabin-wide and streams to your device, but in-seat power (USB-A plus 110/220v plugs) only reaches First Class and Comfort+. In the Main Cabin, arrive with your phone charged.
