Flying Delta's 767-400ER: Where to Sit

Delta is the last U.S. carrier still flying the 767-400ER, and this three-cabin retrofit rewards travelers who know its quirks. Most of you will be back in the 184-seat Main Cabin, so start there — the widebody 2-3-2 layout is genuinely friendlier than the narrowbody jets Delta throws at similar routes.

Main Cabin

The 2-3-2 arrangement means the window pairs (A+B on the left, F+G on the right) put two people together with no stranger in the middle — ideal for couples. The only true middle seat is D in the center triple. Comfort+ lives up front in rows 30–33 with extra pitch and recline; 30B and 30G both drew praise for the legroom, though be aware these forward Comfort+ seats have the tray table in the armrest, which narrows the seat and kills underseat storage.

The standout economy picks are the exit rows. 41A, 41B, 41F, and 41G earn the cabin's best marks for stretch-out legroom, with 40D close behind; 40C and 40E also get the exit-row bump but sit closer to the lavatory, so they rate a notch lower.

Now the seats to skip. Rows 38 and 39 flank a mid-cabin lavatory and it shows — 38B, 38C, 38E, 38F, 39C, 39D, and 39E are the worst-rated seats in the cabin, with 37C, 37E, 38A, 38D, and 38G not far behind. The very back is the other trouble zone: 56B, 56C, 56E, 56F, 57C, 57D, and 57E sit against the rear galley and lavatories, and 56A, 56D, and 56G are only marginally better. If you want a window with an actual view, avoid 46A and 46G, where the window is misaligned with the seat, and note that everything from row 40 forward (back through the Premium Select cabin at row 23) is over the wing with a restricted outlook.

Delta Premium Select

This is the sleeper cabin. It's a 2-2-2 layout in just rows 20–23 with no middle seats anywhere, so every passenger gets either a window or an aisle. Seat width is 19.5 inches with 38 inches of pitch, lie-flat's poorer cousin but a real step up from economy.

Row 20 is the bulkhead, and all six seats — 20A, 20B, 20C, 20D, 20E, and 20F — get the extra legroom and open space in front. The trade-off is no underseat storage, so your bag goes in the bin for takeoff and landing. Note that 23A, 23B, 23E, and 23F don't exist — those positions are blocked — which thins out the back of this cabin, and row 23 is squarely over the wing with a limited view. If the bulkhead legroom matters more than a bag at your feet, take row 20; otherwise the aisle seats in rows 21–22 are the quieter, unrestricted choice.

Delta One

The refreshed Delta One cabin runs rows 1–9 in a staggered 1-2-1 with Thompson Vantage lie-flat seats — every seat has direct aisle access. These are on the narrow side at 20 inches, among the tightest business-class beds on any U.S. widebody, but the seatback screen is sharp and there's a hidden side-table compartment with a mirror and remote.

Aim for the middle of the cabin, rows 2 through 7, away from both galleys. The front and back rows are where problems cluster. 1A and 1D sit next to the forward galley and closet noise. The rear is worse: 8C and 9D are the lowest-rated seats up here, pinned between the aft galley and lavatory, with 8B and 9A also flagged for galley proximity. One traveler in 8D reported it sits right against a loud, cold air-conditioning unit — a flight attendant reportedly called those the worst seats in Delta One. 9B and 9C are blocked entirely. Ratings on 8B are genuinely mixed (one first-time lie-flat flyer loved it), but if you can choose, the closer to center you sit, the calmer the ride.

As far as windows in Delta One, even numbers sit right next to the window and are preferred over odd numbers, which sit right next to the aisle and have the console/traytable between you and the window.

Not worth the cost for this Delta One.

Flying jfk to Cdg 8D. First 8D and 9D are right next to the AC unit. Flight attendant told me worse seats in delta one. Loud and cold! Barely enough room to relax long yes wide not a chance. Like being in a tube on the floor if you lie down. Super tight. Nice cabin for old plane but would have expected just a bit more room!!

    Nice to stretch out.

Very comfortable. there may be more comfortable lie-flat seats but it was the first time flying lie-flat seat and loved it.

Not a bad seat, but plane is old

This is an old plane ... approx 17 years old and Delta has not upgraded the economy comfort or economy seating. I travelled to Barcelona on this plane from JFK in October 2018. The IFE screens are small, hard to see and outdated. I watched movies on my IPad instead. The seats are not that comfortable and we used an inflatable seat cushion we got at Amazon ... that made things better. On the plus side, Delta’s service was good, we got free drinks for buying Delta Comfort, and the food service was pretty good. The Airbus 330-300 in their fleet is much better, with better IFE and a fresher interior. We’re headed to Rome this fall and I’m searching flight options to get the A330 over the 767, if possible. Delta really needs to retire the 767-400 and replace with the A330 neo or similar. I much prefer the 2-4-2 configuration over the Boeing offerings and avoid the 777 or 787 when possible. Seats are too narrow!
