Picking a Seat on Delta's A220-300

Delta's A220-300 (code 223) is a genuinely nice narrowbody — wide seats, huge windows, seatback screens, and free Wi-Fi throughout — but a few seats undercut all that goodwill. Start by knowing which ones to skip, because the plane's back end and its bulkhead row are where regret lives.

First Class

The 2-2 recliners in rows 1-3 have 37" of pitch, 20.5" width, and power at every seat, so the cabin itself is hard to fault. Rows 2 and 3 are the ones to choose — full foot room and two proper windows per window seat. The seat to think twice about is 1D: it has a misaligned window plus the bulkhead's total lack of underseat storage, so your bag goes overhead for taxi. In fact all of row 1 (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D) loses underseat storage and the bulkhead trims foot room, which is why frequent A220 flyers tend to avoid it despite it being row one.

Delta Comfort+

This is the section worth spending on, spanning rows 10-18 with 33-34" pitch. Row 10 (10A, 10B, 10C, 10D, 10E) gets extra legroom as a bulkhead, but the tradeoff is fixed armrests with the screen tucked inside — no bag under the seat ahead, and no moving map during takeoff. For the best combination of room and normal recline, aim for row 18 (18A, 18B, 18C, 18D, 18E), an exit row with a door ahead and full recline behind it. Row 17 (17B, 17C, 17D) also has exit-row legroom but the seatbacks barely recline, so it's a compromise. Note that 17A and 17E don't exist on this jet, and window views across rows 15-18 are partly blocked by the wing.

Main Cabin

Rows 19-33 run 31-32" pitch with the same 18.6" width and seatback screens as Comfort+, so most of the cabin is perfectly comfortable and quiet — the geared engines keep the back rows from being loud. The clear losers sit against the rear galley and lavatory: 32B and 32C, and the entire last row — 33A, 33B, 33C, 33D, 33E — collect foot traffic, noise, and queuing right behind them, with 33 also being the deplaning-last row. If you want a quick exit and don't need extra legroom, grab something in the low 20s over the wing (window views there are restricted, but the ride is smooth and you're near the front of Main).
